The title of the book may be very hard for you to remember, but after going through the whole book, the subject of the book and the message that the author wants to convey through it, will remain in your minds for a very long time.
The book is penned down by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who is also known for her book We Should All Be Feminists.
The book is actually written in the format of a letter from the author to her friend who has recently given birth to a daughter. The author gives some suggestions on how her friend should bring up her daughter so that she can be self-reliant and do everything on her own without depending upon anyone. The author gives fifteen suggestions about bringing up her child in a feminist way.
According to the author, feminism is all about gender equality right from the beginning of the birth of a child.
The author provides some really important observations from our day-to-day life where there appears huge difference between a boy and a girl, as if they are generalized and have to live in a certain way just because of her gender. For example, daughters are taught to be nice and behave so that they will be liked by others. But sons aren’t. The author depicts why girls are advised to be like someone that others will like. Instead, they must be themselves. They must be taught to be honest with their own personality and character. For example, the author talks about a girl who loved playing football and other sports that “Boys” usually play. But then her parents opposed her to behave in a “boyish” way. Well, in reality she wasn’t behaving “boyish”; she was just being herself. So, by preventing her from her being herself, what did the parents do? They simply destroyed her originality and told her to put on a character she was not.
The author beautifully explains all her suggestions and in a way that will make you read it till the end. At least once in your life, read this book, even if you don’t like reading. Thank you.
